Opera Software Working with RIM to Repackage Android Apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Handster, which was acquired by Opera Software earlier this year, have taken an aggressive approach to getting Android apps onto the PlayBook Tablet as quickly as possible. It’s been reported that Handster has already begun sending out emails to developers, informing them about their Android apps being ported over to the BlackBerry App World.

From what we have been hearing from  Handster, it looks like developers won’t have to do much because Handster will handle everything from the verification process, the conversion of APK files, apps signing, and retesting them on the PlayBook.  If you’re a developer,  all you need to do is submit a resized app icon and the updated APK.  Also, freeware apps can be updated by the Handster team automatically, but premium apps will require developers to email them to the Handster development account.

May I add, it’s about time someone stands up and takes action here.  Hopefully this aggressive approach by Handster will open the eyes of other developers and developing firms so that our PlayBooks match up to the competition not only specwise, but will also meet the needs of consumers, which has boiled into a heavy appetite for apps.
